Suleka Mathew was born in India and raised in Vancouver, and has worked extensively as a professional actress in film, television, radio and theatre her whole life.
Suleka is entering her second season on TNT’s hit show Claws (2017), as Detective Arlene Branch. She most recently wrapped the romantic drama feature, Midnight Sun (2018), released by Open Road Films in March, 2018. Prior to her role in that film, Suleka recurred as ‘Chantal’ in ABC’s drama Ten Days in the Valley (2017) opposite Kyra Sedgwick. Other credits include: How to Get Away with Murder (2014), Castle (2009), and Almost Human (2013). Suleka was also a series regular on the ABC drama Red Widow (2013), TNT’s Hawthorne (2009) starring Jada Pinket Smith and ABC’s Men in Trees (2006) opposite Anne Heche.
It wasn’t until she was in her second year at the University of British Columbia that Suleka realized that all she ever wanted since she was a little girl was to be an actor. With the encouragement of friends, she started taking acting lessons. Six months after she enrolled, an agent signed her on and six months after that she got her first paid acting job as a lead in an episode of a Canadian anthology series.
One of Suleka’s first major roles was that of ‘Dr. Sunny Ramen’ on the acclaimed and award winning Canadian dramatic series, Da Vinci’s Inquest (1998). An international hit, the series eventually made its syndicated debut in the United States.
Suleka also had a recurring role on the Emmy Award® winning The West Wing (1999) as well as Stephen King’s The Dead Zone (2002) and co-starred in Hallmark Entertainment’s science fiction miniseries Final Days of Planet Earth (2006). In addition, she has appeared on such series as The X-Files (1993), Stargate SG-1 (1997), Dark Angel (2000), Highlander (1992), and MacGyver (1985).
Other feature film credits include a starring role in the Sundance Festival hit, Touch of Pink (2004), directed by Ian Iqbal Rashid. She appeared in the independent film, The Score (2005), which was screened at the 2005 Vancouver International Film Festival and worked with esteemed director Deepa Mehta in her romantic comedy, The Republic of Love (2003).
Performances for CBC Radio include readings of Bharati Mukherji’s “The Management of Grief”, Anne Giardini’s novel “The Sad Truth About Happiness” and Rohinton Mistry’s “A Fine Balance.” Suleka was also part of the multi-discipline cast of “Shadow Pleasures” created by Veronica Tennant, inspired by the work of Michael Ondaatje.
